Youth Theatre

Nurturing the creative talents and spirits of our young people brings truly remarkable results. We are pleased to place our youngsters in the capable hands of Dr. Glory Van Scott, theatre educator, author, producer, dancer and playwright. Her view that children's theatre should be "international, interracial, intercultural and multi-ethnic" gives our children a very rich experience.

Children receive professional training in drama, dance and vocal music, with the main thrust on drama, and musical theatre. This training will equip your child to continue with professional level of training and even a career in theatre, but the dynamics and discipline will serve them well, whatever area or profession they pursue as a career.

All students are required to take classes in each of the theatre disciplines, conceptualizing the theatre as an umbrella for the arts. Because we live in a world of myriad racial, ethnic, religious and cultural groups, all Dr. Glory's Children's Theatre productions will represent the diverse cultures of the student body. Every student performs. Dr. Glory uses double casting to give as many youngsters as possible opportunity to take on leading roles. However, the value, joy, and great rewards of brilliant ensemble work are also stressed.

The Dr. Glory's Children's Theatre aims to enhance the lives of its students, giving them a total sense of themselves. By her positive approach to creative learning she demonstrates that a fulfilled life comes from oneself, one's commitment, and willingness to work to make it so.

The program is divided into two sessions: January through June and September through December. Two productions are presented annually in the theatre, one during the Family Arts Festival (June) and a final one in the winter season. Classes are scheduled each Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30, Fridays from 4:00-6:00 and Saturdays from 9:30-4:30. Although previous acting experience is not necessary, a general "audition" is held to determine participation, with a maximum of 40 young people. The age range is from 12-17 years old.

All classes involve students learning how to help each other achieve success in memory work - choreography, music, and staging - and to develop an ease of performing, and enjoying the experience. Older students are given the opportunity to help the younger ones in class. This increases their self-esteem, and helps them to understand the beauty and spirit of sharing.

Students will perform in original musicals, written, composed, directed and choreographed by Dr. Glory Van Scott. The curriculum includes classes in drama, musical theatre and dance, taught by Dr. Van Scott and her excellent staff of four.
